Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves more than the chamber itself. In a multiplace hyperbaric environment, the patient may receive oxygen through a hood or mask connected to the facility’s breathing system.

The patient interface must be properly selected, inspected, assembled, and maintained. Understanding the basic components of a hyperbaric hood system can help treatment centers identify worn parts, maintain appropriate inventory, and prepare equipment consistently.


The Basic Components of a Hyperbaric Hood System

While configurations vary, a hyperbaric hood system commonly includes several key components.


Transparent hood

The transparent hood surrounds the patient’s head while allowing clinical personnel to maintain visual observation. Before use, staff should inspect the hood for cracks, discoloration, cloudiness, distortion, or other visible damage.


Neck ring and neck seal

The neck seal helps create the intended fit around the patient’s neck. Neck seals may be available in latex and non-latex materials.

Selection should be based on the applicable product instructions, patient needs, allergy considerations, facility procedures, and the configuration of the hood system.

A neck seal should fit securely enough to prevent unintended leakage without creating unnecessary patient discomfort. Staff should follow the manufacturer’s instructions when sizing, trimming, installing, or replacing a neck seal.


Ports and port caps

Depending on the hood configuration, ports may be used for connections within the oxygen-delivery system. Any unused ports should have the correct caps or accessories installed as directed.

Before each use, check that the ports are intact and that caps and accessories fit securely. Components that are loose, cracked, missing, or visibly damaged should be evaluated before the hood is placed into service.


Tubing and connections

Tubing connects the patient interface to the appropriate breathing system. Tubing should be checked for cracks, kinks, contamination, loose fittings, and other damage that could interfere with proper operation.

Facilities should use tubing and connectors that are compatible with the specific hood system and follow their established procedures for assembly and verification.


Choosing the Appropriate Hood Configuration

  • Latex or non-latex neck-seal requirement

  • Neck-seal size

  • Required caps, accessories, tubing, and connectors

  • Compatibility with the facility’s existing system

  • Whether a prescription or other verification is required

A Practical Pre-Use Inspection

A basic visual inspection can help identify problems before the equipment reaches the patient. Facility procedures and the applicable instructions for use should always take priority.

Before use, personnel should check:

  • The hood is transparent and free from visible cracks or damage.

  • The neck seal is clean, properly installed, and free from tears, holes, or excessive deterioration.

  • The neck ring is secure and undamaged.

  • Required ports, caps, and accessories are present.

  • Tubing and connectors are clean, intact, and properly attached.

  • The complete setup matches the facility’s approved configuration.

  • Equipment requiring replacement or evaluation has been removed from service.

Inspection findings and replacements should be documented according to the facility’s procedures.


Cleaning and Routine Maintenance

Cleaning and maintenance requirements can differ by product and material. Always follow the applicable manufacturer’s instructions and facility infection-control procedures.

Do not assume that one cleaning product or method is appropriate for every hood, neck seal, mask, tube, or accessory. Before using a disinfectant, confirm that it is appropriate for the component’s material and intended application.

A practical maintenance program should include:


  • Routine visual inspections

  • Approved cleaning and disinfection procedures

  • Replacement of worn or damaged components

  • Inventory checks for frequently used parts

  • Documentation of equipment removed from service

  • Staff training on the correct product configuration

Keeping replacement parts available can reduce delays when a hood, seal, port cap, tube, or connector does not pass inspection.
